Lindsey + Dallas' Swing and Soul Wedding
All images by Lindsay Hood Photography.
When I met Lindsey and Dallas at Remedy Cafe, they told me that they had originally planned to use an iPod for their wedding dance, or create a playlist for one of their friends to manage, but the task was starting to get out of hand. Lindsey showed me the list of songs she had been planning to put on their playlist, and I was so excited to get involved - they had great taste in music! We went to work collaborating on their wedding music, and I started brainstorming about how to translate their chosen music into a great wedding dance floor.
One awesome factor for their wedding dance was that for the bachelorette party, Lindsey and her friends went for swing dance lessons at the fabulous Sugar Swing. With those lessons under their belt, the bridesmaids were ready to cut a rug at the wedding - and they didn't disappoint! I loooove playing oldies and swing-appropriate music at weddings, so this was one of my favourite parts of the night.
Another neat discovery was the band The Paper Kites, who Lindsey introduced me to. I found their song 'Bloom' and played it for a romantic slow dance, and now it finds its way into my ceremony background music often.
Here are some of the musical highlights from Lindsey and Dallas' wedding - I hope it gives you some ideas for your own wedding music, or simply puts a smile on your face.
First dance:
- Can't Help Falling In Love - Katharine McPhee & Andrea Bocelli
Father daughter dance:
- I Loved Her First - Heartland
Swing songs:
- Movin' and Groovin' - Sam Cooke - This is a great slower-pace swing song, great for learners or those brushing up on their skills.
- Scratching Circles - JD McPherson - I have been LOVING JD McPherson lately! This guy sounds like he's straight out of the 50s, but this song is only a couple of years old. 'Scratching Circles' was a hit with the swing dancers at this wedding - the song has just the perfect lindy beat.
- Rock Around The Clock - Bill Haley & His Comets
Bouquet toss song: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper
Dance floor highlights:
- I Want You Back - The Jackson 5 - This song ALWAYS kills it on the dance floor, and Lindsey and Dallas' families were no exception.
- Happy - C2C - Dallas told me at our first meeting that he was a big fan of C2C - a band that I love to listen to, and find inspiring as a DJ. I chose this song of theirs for the dance floor because it's got the most dance-able beat that fits well alongside motown or even swing. Both this song, and the amazing dancing in this video will just make you feel goooood. Have a listen! I'd kill for those dance skills!
- We Are Family - Sister Sledge
- My Girl - The Temptations - Okay, if you want to see another gem of a music video (complete with matching suits and choreographed dances...) you need to see this!
- Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Queen
Another thing worth mentioning is that the groom, Dallas, had originally told me he wasn't much of a dancer and didn't know how much he would actually get on the dance floor. On the night of the wedding, it was awesome to see him celebrating on the dance floor - a day filled with joy and love will certainly have that effect on you!
And now for more photos of Lindsey, Dallas, and their rad families enjoying themselves on the dance floor. A huge shoutout goes to Lindsay Hood Photography for sharing these lovely images.
