Edmonton is so full of talented, creative people! When the opportunity popped up to be a part of one of the most exciting events launched in the past year, I jumped at the chance.

Food Fight YEG is a cooking competition where two chefs use mystery ingredients and race against the clock to prove their skill. Set in the modern studio kitchen of Get Cooking Edmonton, it's an exciting and upbeat atmosphere, and it was my job to keep the audience's toes tapping while they watched the action and tasted the delectable appetizers and cocktails that were on offer.

I had so much fun choosing music for this event, which afforded me a little more variety than usual, as the goal wasn't to pack a wedding dance floor but to turn this cooking competition into a party. I'll share some of my favourite songs of the night below, but first here are a few photos from Daren Zomerman, who was reporting from La Nouvelle Beaumont News.

Here's the music!

Golden Years - David Bowie

As Food Fight took place only days after his death, playing some Bowie was a hit with the crowd. I love this tune partially because it evokes some great nostalgia from its appearance in A Knight's Tale,  but mostly because it's got such a groovy, head-bob-inducing beat.

Side note: If there's a Soul Train video of a song I just have to include it... so I can brush up on my dance skills, obviously.

Bizarre Love Triangle - New Order

This song is relatively new to me, and when I first heard it I fell in love. Little did I know what a classic it is - every single time I play it there's someone who lets out a little cheer when they hear it.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun - STRFKR

The awesome thing about covers of well-known songs is that they get people in the crowd singing along (and in the case of Food Fight, dancing in the kitchen!), even if they've never heard that particular version before. In the case of this song, the very 80s original is updated with a driving bass line and  and airy vocals. Love it!

Come Get It Bae - Pharrell WIlliams

Pharrell kills it, and this song has a perfect sound for an event with a lot of action.

Diane Young - Vampire Weekend

I just can't help but sing and dance along to this song! Listen to this, and watch the video and just try to keep yourself from bouncing along...
