Laura + Kevin’s Matrix Hotel Wedding with Indie, Alternative and Celtic Punk Jams

Edmonton Wedding DJ Matrix Hotel

All images by Kelly Redinger

From my first meeting with Kevin and Laura, I knew that their wedding was going to be laid back, sentimental, and a ton of fun – just like they are. They have great taste in music, and one of the things they were looking forward to most at their wedding was celebrating on the dance floor with all of their friends.

I love working at Matrix Hotel, so I was looking forward to this wedding a lot, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. On a cold, snowy day in Edmonton, the love between these two was enough to keep the whole room warm. 💜

Grand Entrance: Right Above It – Lil Wayne ft. Drake

Throughout cocktails and dinner, I was able to mix in some of Kevin and Laura’s alternative favourites, including A Day to Remember, Comeback kid, Thrice, Audioslave, The Tragically Hip, The Black Keys, Frank Turner and Explosions in the Sky, to name a few.

First dance: First Day of My Life – Bright Eyes

Mother Son dance: Your Song – Elton John

Father Daughter dance: When You Need Me – Bruce Springsteen

And then it was on with the dance floor… did we ever have a blast!

Not long after their first dance, Laura’s closest friends had me stop the music and put on a custom mashup they made and choreographed a dance to. It was a complete surprise to Laura, and it’s clear to see just how much she loved it.

Laura and Kevin asked for a little bit of something for everyone, with lots of throwback hip hop and pop, some rap, and a little bit of celtic punk if I could fit it in. Their friends and family were so much fun, and this couple knew what their loved ones were into – I was able to fit in all of the genres they were hoping for and much more. Laura and her friends had spent a lot of time in Ireland, and they got the whole room dancing to some celtic classics at the end of the night.

And now for the photos. All images captured by Kelly Redinger, who did a fab job of capturing the fun-loving people that Laura and Kevin are, and were surrounded with on their wedding day. Enjoy!

Feel Good Music – Volume Four – Featuring Valerie of The Wheelbarrow Gardener & Florist

Valerie Loseth is the owner of The Wheelbarrow Gardener / Florist design studio in St. Albert. Growing up in the Rocky Mountains, with both parents avid gardeners of both flowers and vegetables, it’s easy to see how these influences have guided her to where she is today, even though it may have taken some time and a few detours to finally get there!

The Wheelbarrow Gardener was born in 2014, and started as a small, home-based garden project design and consultation company. During the off-season, Val built her skillset by working for a few local floral designers, educating herself with some flower design and small business courses and doing freelance floral work. In the fall of 2016, Val combined her two passions – gardening and floral design – into one dynamic company with a brick and mortar location in St. Albert, Alberta.I absolutely love Val’s mission for The Wheelbarrow Gardener. Here it is in her own words…

“I believe in the importance of having beautiful things incorporated into our lives – for a day – for a week – for a season – or for a lifetime. I’m passionate about designing wedding, event florals and garden spaces that are full of unique and creative details and whenever possible collaborating with other passionate artists to provide opportunities to deliver beauty to the people and world around us.”

In today’s show, Val shares her ‘feel good’ music, as well as her story of chasing her creative dream, even though much of her life was spent on a completely different career path.

FEEL GOOD MUSIC – Volume Three – Featuring Jeff of Newman Mentalism

Jeff Newman grew up in a small town in the Canadian prairies. As a matter of fact… he grew up in the same small town that I did! Only a couple years apart in the tiny school we both went to, Jeff and I were inevitably pals through high school until we went separate ways after graduation.

When I saw that he began performing as a magician and mentalist, it seemed like a perfect fit for his personality, and I’ve been eager to see him perform when we happen to be in the same city. That hasn’t happened just yet, but I was excited to have the opportunity to see him for the first time in about a decade to record this show and learn more about his journey to become a travelling performer.

In today’s show, Jeff shares his ‘feel good’ music along with his story with me, including some great thoughts on battling imposter syndrome and taking the leap to pursue his dream full-time.

Renee + Angelo’s Winter Wedding at the DoubleTree by Hilton West Edmonton

Renée and Angelo’s wedding had so many unforgettable elements… epic food, a huge celebration, hilarious speeches, and an incredibly classy atmosphere.

Their reception started with cocktails, where they asked for instrumental jazz to welcome their guests as they mingled in the foyer outside the ballroom. Once the ballroom doors were opened, guests found their way to their seats and soon welcomed the newlyweds and their wedding party into the room.

Grand Entrance:
Bridal Party – Over – Drake (iTunes / Amazon)
Bride and Groom – Jeopardy Theme

As for dinner music, the couple’s selection of jazz fit the mood perfectly, and was a great way to include some Italian music for Angelo’s (giant) side of the family. As always, the food by the DoubleTree was fabulous. After dinner, while Renée’s loved ones raved about her many great qualities, Angelo’s friends and family roasted him pretty thoroughly and got everyone in a lighthearted mood for the rest of the night.

One thing Renée and I have in common is an unreasonable amount of love for Billy Joel – so I was, of course, loving their first dance and father/daughter dance song choices.

First Dance: And So It Goes – Billy Joel (iTunes / Amazon)
Father Daughter Dance: Lullabye – Billy Joel (iTunes / Amazon)
Mother Son Dance: Le Mamme – Toto Cutugno (YouTube)

Classic Top 40, a few classic Italian pop songs, a bit of hip hop and current Top 40 had both friends and family getting out on the dance floor together.

Here’s what Renée had to say about working with PopJukebox:

“Stacey was UNBELIEVABLE at our wedding. Not only did she listen to exactly the kind of music we wanted played, but adapted on the fly to keep our dance floor pumpin’ the entire night. Every time another song would come on and I was at a table talking to people I wanted to sprint over to the dance floor!!! Can’t recommend highly enough.” – Google Review

FEEL GOOD MUSIC – Volume Two – Featuring DJ Kara

I am SO delighted to introduce you to my friend Kara. We originally connected through Instagram, and I just love following along with her work as a mobile DJ in LA. She’s talented, fun, professional and the kind of DJ that gives me ideas and inspires me, just from watching her work. I love tuning in to her latest mixes- this one’s my personal fave! –  and I often discover new music when I do. Naturally, I jumped at the chance to connect with her on a recent trip to LA.

We recorded this episode of FEEL GOOD MUSIC in the super glamorous location of the Motel 6 in Anaheim. 😂 It worked, though I apologize for the poor sound quality of the interview. I was not going to let a poor recording location get in the way of this one, though – I just had to share Kara’s story with you.

One thing I love about Kara’s story is that while she had a broader dream of moving to LA to pursue a career in the music industry, it wasn’t until she ‘fell into” DJing that she had that “this is it, this is for me” feeling. I can definitely relate to that, as someone who stumbled into DJing unexpectedly myself. Kara doesn’t mince words, though. She makes it clear that a huge part of her success has been due to putting in the time and the work necessary to know she’d truly given this dream her all.

Listen to the show below or head to my Mixcloud page to start with the first FEEL GOOD MUSIC show, in case you missed it!

WEDDING MUSIC: Songs To Walk Down The Aisle To

Choosing songs for your processional (walking up the aisle) usually goes one of two ways. Either you’ve had the perfect song (or songs) in mind for years, or it’s WAY TOO HARD to try to pick the right song for this moment! Unsurprisingly, I had plenty of ceremony songs in mind before I got married. However, lots of couples that I work with have a hard time choosing music, and it’s one of the last things they nail down before the big day. So… if you’re struggling to decide on a ceremony song, you’re not alone!

Depending on the size of your wedding party, the size of your ceremony venue, and your personal preference, there’s a few ways to plan your ceremony processional music:

One song for everyone – I like this option, as it keeps things nice and simple. Unless you’re getting married in a huge venue, or outdoors, with a long walk to the front of the aisle, usually one song is plenty of time for everyone to walk up the aisle. If not, your DJ should be able to loop the song so it extends naturally to last until everyone has reached the front.

Different songs for different people – Some couples choose to have one song for first half of the wedding party to enter to, then a second song for the second half of the bridal party, and then a third song for the bride (or whoever is entering last) to enter. This works, too!

Some other combination – Of course, you may choose for both fiancees to enter the wedding together, or to have members of the wedding party enter in a non-traditional way. However you’re planning your processional, choosing multiple songs can be a great way to include a few songs that are special to you. Just be sure to plan it in advance, and have your DJ or a trusted friend well-informed on the plan! We love it when you do you – and we want to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible.

Remember, your DJ will also be able to fade a song in at any point in the track, or skip from one verse to another, so if there’s a particular part of a song that you’d like to hear as you walk down the aisle we can definitely make that happen.

Here’s a playlist of some of our favourite songs to walk down the aisle to. Enjoy!

Be sure to follow this playlist on Spotify, as we’ll be adding songs to it as we discover new music that will make a great ceremony processional song.

VALENTINE’S DAY PLAYLIST: Cheesy 80s Love Ballads

You know us – cheesy music is something we usually avoid at all costs. But… Valentine’s Day. You just can’t escape the cheese on February 14th. It’s just part of the holiday. So why not embrace it, and pump the most cheese-filled love jams you can find?

Well, when it comes to cheesy love songs, our latest playlist has you covered. There’s nothing like an epic 80s love ballad to prompt a sing-a-long. We recommend listening to this playlist on February 14th, while eating pizza at home for dinner because you know that it’ll be impossible to get a seat at any restaurant. After dinner, may we suggest a great 80s flick like Dirty Dancing, Back to the Future, or Ferris Bueller’s Day off? Now that sounds like a great night.

Here’s a playlist with the cheesiest of love songs out there – 80s love ballads!

WEDDING MUSIC: Ceremony Recessional Song Ideas

wedding ceremony recessional song music ideas

One of the most fun pieces of music during a wedding is the wedding ceremony recessional. You just did it. You said the vows, exchanged the rings, and signed the papers… you’re freaking married! You get to kiss your spouse for the first time ever, and look back at all of the amazing people who love you so much that they came from far and wide to witness this very moment… what’s the right song for that moment?

Personally, I’m partial to upbeat, celebratory songs for the recessional. It’s just the perfect time to set a vibe that says, “HECK YES, WE’RE MARRIED!” So, you’ll find that this playlist is filled with songs that lend to that atmosphere.

That said, if you’re going for a dreamy, romantic and mellow vibe throughout your ceremony, you may want to select a recessional song that has a slower, softer sound. You won’t find the right song here, but you can check out my Spotify playlists for more ceremony-appropriate songs.

Just remember – we’re able to start your recessional song at any point in the track. So if you want to highlight a particular verse, or cut out a slow intro, we can totally do that! Contact us to chat about how we can make your ceremony recessional awesome.

Here’s a playlist filled with great songs for your wedding ceremony recessional. Enjoy!

Be sure to follow this playlist on Spotify, as we’ll be adding songs to it as we discover new music that will make a great ceremony recessional song.

Chloe + Dan’s Wedding at The Country Lodge – Edmonton Wedding DJ

Stunning boho details, a barefoot bride, a dream team of wedding vendors, and a killer dance party… what’s not to love about Chloe and Dan’s wedding!?

When I first met Chloe, she described herself as a music fanatic and told me that she wanted her wedding to be filled with songs that take your breath away; songs that make you say “OMG! I love this song!” Girl… you got it. One of the most important things to Chloe and Dan was that everyone has a good time. They wanted a cheese-free dance floor with lots of pop and hip-hop. As you can imagine, I was delighted to be a part of their celebration.

When I arrived at the wedding, I was stoked to find out that I’d be spending the day with some of my favourite ladies in the Edmonton wedding industry. Paula from Arrow Films was there, the decor was provided by Neat Rentals, and an incredible ceremony backdrop was being assembled by Rachelle from Flowers by Willows. Elyse from Special Event Rentals was there as the day-of coordinator, so I knew we’d all be in good hands.

The ceremony was held in the loft of the Country Lodge, such a cozy location for a winter wedding ceremony. Here’s the music that Chloe and Dan chose for their wedding ceremony:

Dan + his Parents’ entrance song: Loving You Easy – Zac Brown Band (iTunes/Amazon)
Groomsmen, Bridesmaids + Ring Bearer’s entrance song: Home – Phillip Phillips (iTunes/Amazon)
Chloe’s entrance: Can’t Help Falling in Love – Haley Reinhart (iTunes/Amazon)
Signing of the Registry: Signed Sealed Delivered – Stevie Wonder (iTunes/Amazon)
Recessional: Gold On the Ceiling – The Black Keys (iTunes/Amazon)
Here are some of Jessica Fern Facette’s gorgeous photos of the ceremony!

Once these lovebirds had made their celebratory dance back down the aisle, everyone headed to the main floor of the lodge to enjoy cocktails and some sweet upbeat romantic music.

Grand Entrance song: You Make My Dreams – Hall & Oates (iTunes/Amazon)

After a delicious dinner (seriously I can not get enough of the perogies at the Country Lodge *drool*), and a few thoughtful toasts, it was on to the party.

First Dance song: Work Song – Hozier (iTunes/Amazon)
Father/Daughter + Mother/Son song: My Wish – Rascal Flatts (iTunes/Amazon)

After the first dance, both Chloe and Dan danced with their parents to the same song, inviting the bridal party to join them halfway through. Once the formalities were over, guests were keen to hit the dance floor. Luckily for them, Chloe had given me a list of floor-fillers that she had to hear, which included some of my favourite hits.

Here are some of the highlights from Chloe + Dan’s wedding dance floor:

Hey Ya! – Outkast (iTunes/Amazon)
Mo Money Mo Problems – Notorious B.I.G. (iTunes/Amazon)
Super Bass – Nicki Minaj (iTunes/Amazon)
Work It – Missy Elliott (iTunes/Amazon)
Jenny From The Block – Jennifer Lopez (iTunes)
Club Can’t Handle Me – Flo Rida (iTunes/Amazon)
Bootylicious – Destiny’s Child (iTunes/Amazon)
Fancy – Iggy Azalea (iTunes/Amazon)
Party In The U.S.A – Miley Cyrus (iTunes/Amazon)
Yeah! – Usher (iTunes/Amazon)
Gold Digger – Kanye West (iTunes/Amazon)
Get Busy – Sean Paul (iTunes/Amazon)
No Scrubs – TLC (iTunes/Amazon)
Miami – Will Smith (Amazon)
I Think We’re Alone Now – Tiffany (iTunes/Amazon)
Dancing On My Own – Robyn (iTunes/Amazon)
Ignition Remix – R Kelly (iTunes/Amazon)
Shake It Off – Taylor Swift (iTunes/Amazon)
I Love It – Icona Pop (iTunes/Amazon)
Saturday Night – Whigfield (iTunes/Amazon)
Shots – LMFAO (iTunes/Amazon)
Love Like This Before – Faith Evans (iTunes)

You can listen to all of these songs on a Spotify playlist here.

Here’s what Chloe had to say about her experience with PopJukebox…

“Stacey surpassed my expectations for a wedding DJ. She was phenomenal. She had absolutely everyone at our wedding dancing from my two year old nephew to my 86 year old grandma. My new hub who NEVER dances was on the dance floor all night having a blast. You will not be disappointed. She is incredible. I’ve never had more fun on a dance floor. Everyone has been ranting & raving about the music! Stop looking. She is your DJ.”

(You can read more Google reviews here.)

We had such a good time on the dance floor that I had to make a highlight video from the wedding. Enjoy!

Thank you, 2017!

Tonight I’m ringing in the new year doing one of my absolute favourite things: DJing a wedding.

It feels so fitting to be saying farewell to 2017 and welcoming 2018 while playing music – this year has been HUGE for PopJukebox. I got to be part of so many unforgettable celebrations, and I have become so proud of this business I get to call my own.

In late 2016, I started taking more videos and GIFs at weddings. After our wedding, I loved seeing the candid photos and videos that our friends took – fun photos and videos of the dance floor bring back memories from our wedding like nothing else, and I wanted to be able to give that experience to my clients. As a result, I was able to roll some of my favourite dance floor moments from 2017 into a little highlight video. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

…and that was just a small taste of 2017 – there was a ton more footage I would have loved to include! As it is, I cut the footage down from 45 minutes. One funny thing about this year is that after years of rarely playing the YMCA (it falls in the “a little too cheesy” category for me), I had SO MANY couples request it for their wedding in 2017, and as you can see in the video it was always a big hit. I was also asked to play “Shout” at virtually every wedding I performed at… I’m not complaining, though. 🙂

Some other highlights from 2017 include…

  • Surpassing 100 weddings DJed and 200 total events DJed! By the end of 2017, my career totals are 123 weddings and 234 total events.
  • DJing for my largest crowd yet – 2500 people!
  • Becoming an approved vendor with the Edmonton Public School Board and performing at four school dances.

  • Performing at the U of A Week of Welcome in September.

  • Being part of the Boutique Wedding Workshop in November, which turned out to be a really memorable day of shared wedding advice and tips.
  • Being interviewed by Digital DJ Tips (an online DJ training site that I’ve followed for years) about my DJ business, and then being asked to be a course ambassador for their Mobile DJ Blueprint course.
  • Travelling to Palm Springs with my “Boss Babes,” where we relaxed in the sun, deepened our friendships and chatted about our businesses.

  • Visiting California in November, and getting to meet an Instagram DJ friend in person. I interviewed DJ Kara for an upcoming online radio show, and it was such a delight to meet her and chat about pursuing the DJ dream!

  • DJing two Junior High School Halloween dances dressed as Lady Gaga.

  • Refreshing my brand with a new logo, new website and new images… HUGE shoutout to Christina Louise Branding and Glossie for their collaboration on this – I couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out!

Edmonton, thank you. Thank you for an amazing year getting to do what I love. Thank you for inviting me to be part of your celebrations. Thank you for following along on social media. And most of all… Thank you for dancing!

Happy New Year!
